“One should always be drunk. That’s all that matters…But with what? With wine, with poetry, or with virtue, as you chose. But get drunk.”
― Charles Baudelaire, Paris Spleen
The day after St. Patrick’s and my head is feeling a little woozy. I spent yesterday evening, with alcohol, watching the original 1985 performance in Dublin of River Dance with Michael Flatley and Jean Butler. Followed by the Irish Rovers etc. So today as punishment for my sins I attempted some poetry. Don’t cry, promise me.

I'm in my cups
Staring
With glassy eyes
At my shattered soul
I'm in my cups
Glaring
With desperate sighs
Into that gaping hole

My cup overflows
Drowning me
In an incoming tide
Of desolation
My cup overflows
Astounding me
With a drunken pride
Of revelation

Drinking a litre of alcohol
Is never good for the soul
Its the wrong spirit, you see
And too large a fee
For my shattered brain to console

There’s a lesson to be learnt from this wonderful poem. Get a bigger cup.

As usual Susan you are forever practical. If I get a bigger cup I won’t be able to hold it.

Well said. The bottom of a bottle is never a way to drown any sorrows. Really liked the last verse.
