A Rum Tale

Responding to Denise’s SIX SENTENCE STORY using the word ” VOLUME “. https://girlieontheedge1.wordpress.com/2020/09/30/its-six-sentence-story-thursday-link-up-127/

Captain Jebediah Morgan looked down on his crew swilling their daily ration of rum, contemplating that the volume of rum he and his crew had consumed over the last ten years would fill an ocean.

Rum had been very kind to him, it kept his men content, and had led to his captaincy ten years previous when the former captain had fallen into the hold, breaking his neck, after consuming too much of the spirit.

In his rum filled fantasies he would regret not being born a hundred years previous, in the the golden age of piracy, but had come to accept the reality of this current periods meagre pickings.

On a clear, sunny day in the year of our lord 1886, the lookout spotted a ship sailing on the horizon, and after a lengthy pursuit they boarded and captured their prize.

Much to the chagrin of the pirates the only cargo was 500 barrels imprinted with the words ” Coca Cola, the temperance drink” and they snorted in disgust at its implications.

Captain Jebediah Morgan, looked down on his crew swilling their daily ration of rum and coke, reveling in his decision to combine the two, thereby preserving his rum supply and discovering a delightful new drink in the process.

      1. Very lighthearted and humorous. Ho ho ho and a bottle of rum, your inspirational stories are great to read. Alas poor captain Morgan, you are no more, Mr Smirnoff has done you in.

    1. I was researching the history of Coca Cola, and it is actually true that they first tried to market it as ‘the temperance drink’ in 1886. I thought a temperance drink blended well with an alcoholic one.

  1. That was a lot of fun 🙂 Love the name ‘Jebediah’ and the spin on how he was a pirate captain from after the golden age and came across Coca-Cola. Amber rum mixed as a ‘Rum Rummer’ style cocktail is one of my fave ever tipples, but not really into rum and coke.
As this six is piratey, it would be rude for me to leave without saying ‘ahoy’, ‘Arr lad’ and ‘Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!’ 🙂

    1. Right back at ya with a “Yo, ho, ho and a bottle of rum”. I’ve been watching ‘Black Sails’ on Starz TV, about pirates, found it fascinating, a real democracy, and so did some research. The golden age of piracy, from memory, was around 1725 to 1825.

      1. Lol. I don’t drink very often – probably 4 cocktails per year, but sometimes…. those look even better than the dessert! Thanks for the visit and for helping cheer me on. One more book at the end of October and this bunch is done. 🙂
